Sports Science Program for Medical Massage. January, 2006 - Marie A. Ruberto, Managing Director

The American Manual Medicine Association in conjunction with the American Medical Massage Association has developed a new Sports Science Diplomate program with national board certification. The program is based in part on American Council on Exercise (ACE), the American Academy of Sports Medicine training, and newly developed AMMA materials for personal training, executive training, and sports science. Interestingly, this new AMMA program has an additional training component in Martial Science leading to a master's degree in Martial Science and a black belt in martial arts. In addition, to AMMA certification program graduates are encouraged to obtain ACE certification. Program participants purchase ACE educational materials and the ACE textbook is used for part of the training program. The bulk of the educational materials have been developed by the AMMA. The AMMA headquarters serves as an ACE testing site. The program is composed of classroom lecture and demonstration, health club onsite physical training, and personal training assignments. Martial Science program participants take additional classes in Kenpo Karate and Judo Orthopedics. Graduates are expected to achieve skills in personal training, executive training, corporate health promotion, human performance testing, and direct exercise and self defense classes. The AMMA recognizes the strong relationship between manual therapy and rehabilitation. The AMMA is continuing its commitment to provide its membership with exciting new educational programs and ongoing opportunities to become multi skilled health care professionals. The AMMA also feels that the combination of manual therapy with the ability to work with individuals, groups, and corporations will greatly increase its members practice and financial success.
